Leading Cybersecurity in Your Organization
Developed as a partnership between Columbia Business School and leading industry practitioners, this program is designed to educate executives on the best practices related to the detection, prevention, and remediation of cyber breaches.
Digital assets are the backbone of our economy. However, our digital ecosystems are under constant threat. Cybersecurity has risen to the top of the list of risks that senior leaders must manage to avoid long term damage to their reputation, finances, and regulatory image. In Leading Cybersecurity in Your Organization, you will learn how to measure the extent of the threat, identify and shield critical digital assets from cyber threats, and build leadership expertise to manage these threats, either via internal investment or agile outsourcing.
This program is fast-paced, dynamic, and practical. It offers a unique learning experience by combining interactive lectures and discussions with case studies and simulation exercises.
Please contact our Learning Solutions Specialists at +1 212-854-3395 for a personal conversation to learn more.
This program will equip you with the knowledge, skills, and tools to manage your cyber threat strategically. The initial table-top simulation will help you review the failures identified and provide action items to improve upon those weaknesses over time.
After attending the program, you will be ready to:
- Equip the C-suite for an imminent attack
- Assess how severe the threat is that is facing your company
- Change the cyber awareness culture in your company
- Conduct a complete threat analysis in your digital ecosystem of suppliers, vendors, and customers
- Evaluate threats that acquisitions of other firms can bring
- Discuss whether you should pay a ransom if attacked
- Decide when and what to disclose to regulators and your investors
- Minimize the damage to your reputation with your customers and future employees
- Decide what the optimal cyber defense budget should be in terms of dollars and investments
- Learn from past cyberattacks on Yahoo, Marriott, Experian, and Colonial Pipeline
- Plan for the road ahead given the best practices in the industry
Upon completion of this program, you will also earn two credits towards a Certificate in Business Excellence from Columbia Business School, granting select alumni and tuition benefits. Learn more.
The program uses a combination of interactive lectures, case studies, and group simulation exercises.

Day 1 starts with a table-top simulation where you learn when to conduct such a table-top, how to initiate such an exercise, what to focus on, what to include, whom to include, how to plan, what specific scenarios to consider, how to conclude with an “after action review,” and what to do afterward. You will also learn the most pressing cyber threat that firms face today and how that threat is evolving. We conclude with a session on whether cyber risk has already become a systemic threat to our economy, payment systems, banks, networks, and our national security and what, if anything, can individual companies do to battle state actors or to lobby the U.S. government for assistance and reform.
Day 2 focuses on detailed detection and response plans you can put into place. We discuss the nature of cyber risk protocols your firm has, introduce you to the NIST framework, assess the value of hiring white hat hackers to challenge your systems, consider whether latent sleeper agents hide inside your systems, and discuss investing in cultural changes that your staff, customers, and suppliers need to undergo to prevent attacks to your digital ecosystem. We conclude with post-mortems of the attacks at Yahoo, Target, Experian, Marriott, and Colonial Pipeline.
Day 3 begins with a session on ransomware. What are the pros and cons of paying a ransom, if attacked? What are the chances of being hit a second and third time, if you pay once? How do you deal with cyber social activists who attack to further a social cause? How do you set up an ethical hacking program? We also discuss the value of buying cyber risk insurance. We then move on to consider the legal and regulatory disclosure issues surrounding cybersecurity. When attacked, how do you decide when to go public and how much information should you share? What is the right cybersecurity budget? We conclude by reviewing the playbook of best practices to manage cyber risk.
